Coinbase Wallet Extension is a **self-custody** browser wallet, fundamentally different from the Coinbase exchange account you may be familiar with. The former means you personally hold the private keys, and Coinbase cannot help you recover your assets; the latter is a custodial brokerage account. This article covers official download channels, setup process, supported networks, and critical security warnings.

### Official Download and Basic Information

The only legitimate source is the **Chrome Web Store**, with the developer listed as **Toshi Holdings Pte. Ltd** (a Coinbase affiliate entity). The current version is approximately **3.149.0** (updated early October 2026), with a user base exceeding one million. Note: The rating is only **2.7/5** (based on 917 reviews), which is relatively low—a factor worth considering before installation.

Do not search for "Coinbase Wallet Extension download" through search engines and click on unknown links. Security researchers have identified multiple phishing domains impersonating this extension (such as `public--coinbase-wallet-extension.pages.dev`), which have been flagged as malicious by over a dozen security vendors, designed to steal your recovery phrase or password.

### Setup Process

**Creating a New Wallet**
After installation, select "Create new wallet" and set an access password. The system will then generate a **12-word recovery phrase**. This phrase is the sole proof of ownership of your assets and must be **handwritten on paper and stored offline**. Coinbase explicitly states that it cannot recover this phrase for you—if lost, assets are permanently irrecoverable.

**Importing an Existing Wallet**
Supports importing wallets from MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, and other wallets via recovery phrase. It also supports importing an existing Coinbase Wallet mobile wallet. The import process requires entering the original wallet's 12-word recovery phrase into the extension.

**Distinguishing from Coinbase.com Accounts**
Coinbase.com is a custodial exchange where you can buy and sell cryptocurrency with fiat currency, and the platform holds assets on your behalf. The Coinbase Wallet Extension is a non-custodial tool where private keys are stored locally in your browser. You can connect the two to transfer assets from your exchange account to your wallet, but they are not the same thing.

### Supported Networks and Features

The official description states support for **Ethereum and all EVM-compatible networks**, including Avalanche, Polygon, BNB Chain, and others. Additionally, it supports **Solana and SPL tokens** sending and receiving. Features include: connecting to DApps, NFT management, DeFi interactions, DEX trading, and hardware wallet support.

### ⚠️ Security Warnings (Must Read)

**Phishing Extension Attacks Are Rampant**
HP security reports indicate that between April and June 2026, a malware named "Needle Stealer" specifically targeted wallet extensions including **Coinbase Wallet**. Attackers distributed malware disguised as "AI trading assistants"—after installation, the malware would **replace legitimate browser wallet extensions with malicious copies**. When users entered passwords, credentials were sent directly to attacker servers. This means: even if you installed the legitimate extension, if you later downloaded suspicious software, the extension could be silently replaced. Regularly checking whether the extension behaves abnormally, and never downloading unknown "trading tools" or "AI assistants," are necessary precautions.

**Recovery Phrase Is the Only Red Line**
No legitimate Coinbase support, website, or extension will ever proactively request your 12-word recovery phrase. Any request is a scam.
